Te Huarahi Tika Trust

IN 2000 THE TRUST WAS ESTABLISHED TO ENABLE MĀORI A RIGHT TO PURCHASE THE 3G SPECTRUM RADIO FREQUENCY BEING AUCTIONED BY THE CROWN THAT YEAR

The Crown provided preferential rights to radio frequency spectrum with a $5M cash contribution to the Trust.  Hautaki was established as the subsidiary which would explore the opportunity to purchase management rights over 3G spectrum and pursue the commercial development of these rights on behalf of Māori.

From the outset Hautaki lobbied the government to develop an appropriate regulatory framework and at the same time sought joint venture partners to work with.  This led to the establishment of New Zealand’s third mobile network, 2degrees.

He Kaupapa Tuku iho

To produce Māori outcomes for Māori, we focus on the distinctiveness as Māori.  The worldview of our people is defined by the values, beliefs and practices developed over generations. Māori.  These kaupapa continue to shape Māori thinking today with tikanga (policies and practices) constantly being developed and refined to give expression to these mana enhancing behaviours.

The Board has adopted a set of ‘kaupapa tuku iho’ (inherited values) and tikanga which are embodied in all that we do.   These are below;
